Planning Ahead

So I've still got a ton of storyboarding to do before I even begin set building let alone props... but... when can that stop anyone :D
I'm really excited about this new project, and keep thinking about it. One decision - admittedly largely influenced by Coraline - is to venture into miniature knitting - eeks!
I've been knitting since I was little, and this has been my most ambition project to date:A 4x8' 'Castle in the Sky' blanket made from a pattern I created in TVPaint. So it'll be good to work smaller this time ;)
Will be awhile until the needles get here (special order off ebay) but I can't wait to get started on making his gloves, hat, scarf, a sweater or two, etc! Get them going and work on them on bus rides so I'm not losing time later on.
Can't wait to start - has anyone here tried working with the tiny needles - any advice?

  1. It in no way compares to what you and the talented micro knitter/designer in the Coraline clip do. But I did use tooth picks as needles to make this prop for the Knitting Beetles in my project...

  2. That looks fantastic Shelley! I don't think I'd be able to go that small with the fluffy yarn - it's a bugger to work with full sized!

  3. I was thinking about that myself at one point. I saw some really nice knitted sweaters in one of the Fimfarum shorts.

Looks like this gal also used some kind of sanded toothpicks.

I think if they'd pan back you'd find that she's in an asylum :)

  4. oh my!! I think you're right about the asylum ;)
I did knit once with toothpicks, but I think they were thicker than those and it was just a little bracelet (can't crochet!)
I think Strider recommended using silk thread around armature wire so I'd be knitting with the same stuff - scary!

  7. Ooooh, good luck with the mini-knitting Emily. Don't send yourself cross-eyed!
I'm going to do some tiny crocheting of chainmail for some of Nofby's puppets soon, so I will be watching your progress with interest.

  8. Thanks Ceri, I'm really looking forward to seeing your miniature crochet! I can't even master the full sized version ;)
The needles should be here in a week or so, and I'm really excited! Already have every colour of embroidery cotton imaginable, and I think this is an excuse to buy silk thread.

  10. oh my gosh! I hadn't seen her site before - thanks for the link! That's incredible - fortunately I'll only be working at 1/6 scale... so I'll go crazy only half as fast? ;)
It looks like a great site to buy thread from as well, thanks!
